No exactly a secret but when you visit Rome, be sure to visit the Pantheon. Please snap a few shots of its oculus and send them to me. Then have a limoncello ice at one of the vendors off the Piazza di Pantheon. Enjoy!
Oregon - Drive up or down Hwy 101. Amazing. You can drive on many parts of the beach (see map link for beach access on the left hand side of the map http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/TD/TDATA/gis/docs/STATEMAPS/official_state_map_13_15_front.pdf)
- Visit Astoria (northern tip) - This is about where Lewis and Clark finally stopped and created Fort Clatsop. Very cool American history. They also filmed Goonies, Short Circuit, and Kindergarten Cop there.
- Visit Crater Lake (SW corner) - great views, though in this time of year, there might be a good deal of snow around!
South America
Peru - There are guided tours to Machu Picchu out of Cusco; either a multi-day hike or train.
Chile - Valpraiso and Vina Del Mar on the coast outside of Santiago are beautiful. Patagonia is also breathtaking and you can hike up volcanoes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villarrica_(volcano)).
Salamanca in western Spain is a medieval town with unique architecture, buildings made from a golden sandstone. The university and cathedral date to the 1200's. It's as interesting as Bruges, but a different architecture, plus the Spaniards really know how to party all night.
In China, I'd visit Gui Lin and arrange for a board ride down the Li river to Yangshao. The scenery is spectacular and Yangshao is a rural town where you can see how the majority of Chinese people live.
If you get to India, see the Taj Mahal. I know it's not on your list to go to India, but the Taj is the most beautiful building I've ever seen, by far.
In the South of France, the town of Antibes has a Picasso museum that was basically the house he lived in for several years and all the art he produced there, including some important pieces. The town is midway between Cannes and Nice, which are pretty great, too.
If you happen to go north through Boise, ID, route 84 in northern Oregon takes you along the river into the Columbia River Gorge area with some spectacular hiking. There are tourists stops along the way, and you'll want to start with Multnomah Falls east of Portland. Try out Deschutes Brewery in Portland...among a few others.
I was in Iceland in January 2002. I suggest you visit the usual places, like Blue Lagoon and ride the horses [which are small like Shetland ponies but 'full sized' according to the locals]. Take a drive out to the countryside and see several geyers [one named Geysir -which is a term that we use that is actually taken from the Icelandic language]Be sure to drive over to Gullfoss. It's a beautiful waterfall near the geysers & a fair driving distance from the capitol. [it was frozen in January but still beautiful]
]Also be sure to check out the homes with greenhouses. Since there is little land for agriculture, folks grow lots of their own food. The nightlife in Reykjavik is legendary but be sure to check the town out during the day as well. There is a statue of Leif Eriksson outside the tallest church in town. And many other statues scattered about as well.
One very cool place I dined was at a place called Perlan. It's located atop geothermal tanks, and it's a rotating restaurant so you can view the skyline at sunset as well as planes flying into the local airport. Very neat place to visit, whether you dine there or not.
Sandra, Totally thrilled for your adventures! Must see/visit: Cusco, PerĂº (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cusco) - search for the natural hot springs along with soaking up the spirituality of Machu Picchu. Maui, Hawaii - Haleakala, the active volcano - Drive at 2am to watch the sunrise. Then travel to the Seven Sacred Pools on the Road to Hana. Enjoy! Wonderful meeting your son and yourself. Will follow your travels. Susan
When you go to Kenya and if you want to volunteer somewhere, go to Cura Orphanage. http://www.curaorphanage.org/ It's pronounced "sure-ah". Also, if you meet a redhead woman from Los Angeles named Danielle there - tell her Steve said hi (she's my ex).
When you go to Yucatan peninsula - Mexico, do not miss to snorkel with Whale-Sharks. Only in summer and best day after full moon, it is a 2 hours boat trip from Cancun. Amazing experience!!!
Please post any suggestions you may have for me to visit. I'm particularly fond of those 'hidden gems' that few tourists know about.
